Five days, and fewer than you think
A five-day week loses time at both ends. Caretaking and cleaning need their own access, and deliveries have to arrive when someone is there to receive them. Realistically you are working with three usable days in the middle.
That is not a reason to avoid the window. It is a reason to plan it now rather than order in it.
Planned around the holiday, not squeezed into it
A specialist sixth form in central London, working to the constraint every school has: the room had to be usable on the first morning back.
The survey happened well in advance and the furniture was on site before the week began. That is almost always what separates a holiday installation that finishes from one that does not.
What fits
- Replacing furniture where the layout stays broadly the same
- Reupholstering existing seating, collected in advance and returned for term
- Storage, lockers and shelving
- Refreshing a dining or social space where the servery is unchanged
- Moving furniture between rooms to match how they are now used
What does not fit
- Anything requiring new power, data or lighting positions
- Fixed laboratory or workshop benching
- Work that changes escape routes or room capacities
- Floor finishes that need curing before furniture returns
- Whole-floor reconfiguration where rooms change purpose
Most of these fit comfortably at Christmas, Easter or over the summer.
Four things that decide the outcome
A measured survey. Door widths, lift sizes and the route from the delivery point. Most delays come from access, not furniture.
Confirmed delivery before the holiday. Stock in the warehouse the week before, not in transit during it.
An agreed disposal route. Where furniture can be reused or recovered instead, decide early — it changes both cost and waste.
One named contact with keys. Site access on closed days is the most common cause of a lost day.
If the survey has not happened yet, October is probably too tight for anything beyond a straight swap. Christmas gives two weeks, Easter two more, the summer six.
